ALBAWABA - U.S. President Donald Trump’s long-time obsession with Greenland seems to have not gone away as he claims that the Danish semi-autonomous territory will be under U.S. control by the time he leaves office.
Trump has sought to add Greenland to U.S. holdings since before he returned into the Oval Office for his second term, now he states that by the end of his term in January 2029 Greenland will be a part of the U.S.
While the move made him popular among his MAGA base, it severely strained U.S. relations with its European allies who see Greenland as an indivisible part of the continent.
Trump’s threats to Greenlandic sovereignty went beyond words when his administration slapped a 10 percent tariff on goods imported from several European allies, including Denmark to which Greenland legally and historically belonged.
Tensions and tariffs subsided, however, after Trump had a “very productive” meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte, in which they “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland.”
Now tensions are flaring again after Real America’s Voice host Steve Gruber’s talk with Trump during an audio interview on Friday;
Gruber: “I made a prediction on this program that before you left office, that Greenland would be under our operational control.”
Trump: “You'll be right. They [Europe] want to do something, Greenland is important from our standpoint, not from their standpoint…You should make that bet.”
Trump has stated previously that the US needs to acquire Greenland for national security purposes and if it doesn’t then someone else will, namely Russia and China.
