ALBAWABA - An Iraqi judge ordered the detention of four police officers after accusations of raping a female detainee at a police station in the Arab country.
An investigation court judge in Al-Diwaniyah said that a police officer and three police personnel are under probe into accusations that they alternately raped a female detainee at a police station, a security source told Iraqi news outlet Shafaq News on Saturday.
A female detainee said during questioning that the officer and the three personnel sexually assaulted her inside al-Nahda police station in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate.
Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Hussein Al-Awadi, said that the ministry will take all measures to Independently invistigate the case, stressing that it won't tolerate "any violation that affects human dignity or violates the law and military regulations".
It is worth mentioning that, as per Iraqi law regarding rape, the judge could hand down a sentence of up to 20 years in jail.
The incident caused massive outrage among the community in Iraq, as many described it as a horrible crime since the police are the ones who should protect the people, especially women, implement the law and achieve justice.
